NSF issues COVID-19 safety protection certificates using ToolChain

NSF International – a leading provider of independent product testing, inspection and certification – has integrated VeChain ToolChain into its operations.

For over 75 years, the organization has facilitated standards development for the water, food and health science industries. Now, in response to the pandemic, it has designed a COVID-19 Preventive Control Practice (PCP) service to help its corporate clients to reopen and stay open in a safe and confident manner.

Why create a COVID-19 Preventive Control Practice (PCP) service?

With confirmed outbreaks in several food processing plants across the world – including at a Mowi owned site in Poland, a 2 Sisters factory in the UK, a Pacific Seafood facility in the US and at an American Seafoods factory trawler – having 3rd party health and sanitation professionals inspect and verify in-house infection risk procedures is of vital importance and could become a legal requirement in the “new normal”. NSF International’s solution enables businesses to protect and regain the trust of their staff and customers by:

  • Reviewing their standardized operations, working environment and team management procedures to ensure that all business activities such as production and transportation are undertaken under effective preventive infection control measures
  • Offering continuous supervision and testing – reducing operational risks by issuing warnings when production and operations
  • Providing systematic training for relevant personnel to improve awareness of prevention and control
  • Issuing NSF International authoritative certification to validate the presence of effective COVID-19 preventive control measures throughout all business operations
  • Providing QR codes that can be attached to product labels to allow customers to verify the certification and be confident that the product has been processed and packaged in a safe environment
  • Giving national certification and accreditation to demonstrate that the business meets local compliance

The certificates have been issued from as early as the 31st July 2020 and several companies have now passed the PCP assessment (including Tongliao JSA Food & Beverage Management Service Co., Ltd. and Qingdao Spring Seafoods Co., Ltd).

NSF International is a leader in inspections in the 150 countries it serves, as they help clients to validate and authenticate business processes. Currently, their “Checked by NSF™” program is a solution used by companies like McDonald’s in the UK.

Is VeChain the AWS of Blockchain?

Is VeChain the AWS of Blockchain?

VeChain’s strategic partner Jackson Fu (Cream) recently announced in his post on blockchain bottlenecks that he believed VeChain Toolchain was the “AWS of blockchain”. This comparison to AWS (Amazon Web Services) provoked a discussion with many people sharing the idea. So what’s behind the idea?

Cloud Storage v Blockchain

There’s an obvious comparison to these two emerging data storage technologies, as enterprise cloud storage was a tough sell in the beginning. The idea of uploading private internal and client data to third-party internet service providers wasn’t one that was well-received a decade ago. AWS, the clear leader, launched in 2006 and has maintained their market share ever since, despite later having fierce competition from major tech rivals like Microsoft, Google, and Oracle. As a whole, the cloud storage market has been rapidly exploding, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) that was already forecasted to be sky-high, even before COVID-19 forced many businesses to adopt a “cloud only” business model thanks to remote work and online business models.

For VeChain to become “The AWS of Blockchain”, two things need to happen. First, VeChain needs to recreate the success of AWS in gaining market share by making their offering more innovative, secure, and easier to use than the competition. This seems likely considering VeChain’s increasingly strong position with corporate users such as DNV GL, Walmart China, and Sam’s Club China all becoming early adopters. Secondly, blockchain needs to prove itself to be nearly as valuable as cloud technology in the enterprise space. This is something that will take time to play out, as businesses continue to explore the use cases and functionality of the technology.

Breaking some misconceptions

The feedback to Cream’s article has sparked some confusion regarding how VeChain fits into the cloud computing industry. Twitter user @Martijncvv posted a thread that touched on some of these ideas.

https://twitter.com/Martijncvv/status/1282101739940872192

Martijn had some great points, but the image in the thread seems to imply that VeChain is a competitor to massive service providers like Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud. VeChain’s core product is ToolChain, which is not intended to be used as a cloud service, but as an application deployed on the VeChain mainnet with additional data stored on a cloud server. After all, for a client like Walmart China, it wouldn’t make sense to upload hundreds of thousands of logos, images, and videos to a public blockchain, when only key datasets are essential to the supply chain and need to be verified. That’s why ToolChain’s Developer & Partner versions require a cloud service such as AWS for data storage. (Note: VeChain manages cloud storage in Toolchain’s Standard version to simplify the onboarding process). It’s important to remember that VeChain is not trying to put giants like Amazon and Microsoft out of business. Instead, they are trying to build a valuable service that can be easily used within an existing corporate cloud account, working alongside the tech giants. The result is a partnership that makes AWS and Azure more valuable to their corporate clients, as clients store even more data on the cloud. That explains why last year, VeChain CTO Gu Jianliang was invited to speak at the AWS Summit, pictured below with the title “VeChain and AWS joint empowerment (1 + 1 > 2).”

Source: VeChain101

Last November, VeChain and PwC were also invited to host a closed-doors meeting with Microsoft Azure’s clients to better explain the value proposition that blockchain can bring (Pictured below). Azure clearly sees the benefit in more enterprises deploying VeChain’s blockchain solutions on their cloud, leading to even more revenue for Microsoft.

VeChain’s Toolchain is not an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform like AWS. IaaS is a more bare bones offering that companies can build web pages, mobile apps, databases, and their entire service offering on. ToolChain makes it easy to skip all that by being Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). That includes mobile apps like VeChain Work and VeChain Pro, web apps such as the ToolChain interface, existing VeChainThor blockchain source code (the mainnet), templates, APIs, and much more.

Source: Adapted from azure.microsoft.com

The bad news is that VeChain wont be taking over the projected $623.3 billion dollar cloud market in 2023. Instead, they will be contributing to it, as a blockchain vertical that AWS and Azure can push to their existing clients. Companies wont have to ditch their existing cloud structures on AWS to migrate over to VeChain. Instead, they will just be adding additional services on to their existing cloud invoices. VeChain isn’t trying to take over the cloud service industry, they are just trying to make some of the zettabytes of data stored in the cloud more trusted and valuable. As more data is uploaded to the cloud, a growing volume of data will have the need to be verified. This makes VeChain’s goal of being the leading enterprise blockchain much more plausible. And with allies like AWS and Azure, why should you doubt them?

Notes: We thank @Martijncvv for being a good sport. His educational posts are well worth a follow! He later added in a comment:

I wasn’t talking about VeChain’s Toolchain but the VeChain blockchain itself. I do agree that ToolChain is a SaaS and not an IaaS. But that’s something built ON the blockchain (IaaS). Link

VeChain X Footwear – Shoes on the blockchain [in photos]

VeChain’s ToolChain is quickly making a name for itself in the fashion industry, with big partners such as H&M’s COS, Arket, LVMH, and Givenchy. However, ToolChain goes far beyond just being a platform for major fashion houses. Custom designers and independent artists can take advantage of ToolChain’s IoT chips to make their creations come to life in the digital world while simultaneously verifying the authenticity of the product. Here’s a quick rundown:

Chase Shiel X The Kickz Stand – Air Max 1 ‘Cherry’

Well, it’s only fair that we start with this one. Announced this week, the limited custom design will drop on Chaseshiel.com on Sunday, 29th of June at 12AM (Singapore). Check out this article from The Kickz Stand to get the full scoop.

Answering those burning questions about VeChain & Sam’s Club chicken

Answering those burning questions about VeChain & Sam’s Club chicken

Last week we shared photos and insights from Sam’s Club showing VeChain integration on a section of chicken. This created a pretty hearty reaction on social media, with lots of questions and comments. Rather than address them one by one, we decided to make a mega-thread here.

Great article!

Question for you Ben – were the codes on each packet of Chicken in that freezer the same? What I’m trying to understand, is whether each individual item is tracked or is it done by a batch at a time? — Nashe (@ef_2104) June 4, 2020

Thanks, Nashe. As you may have seen from the sticker below, there is a 10 digit code underneath the QR code. This “ID Code” (身份吗) is unique on each product, and each one links to a different transaction. I wish I would have documented that better, next time I’m back there I’ll try to show that off. It’s also interesting that they chose such a long code – I guess they plan on making a lot of these.

I don’t see a @TysonBrand logo anywhere. It looks like they’re working with a generic label @SamsClub processing plant who gets chicken from Tyson.

This is still pretty cool though. The best #blockchain supply chain stuff that I’ve seen working in real life. — JESSE ℂOUℂℍ (@jessecouch) June 6, 2020

Well Jesse – while I share your enthusiasm, I guess Chinese isn’t a native language of yours. The logo below is the official Tyson Foods logo in Chinese. Pronounced Tài Sēn, this chicken company shares a Chinese name with a famous boxer. Here’s their official website if you feel like a second opinion.

i mean this is great, but until we see adoption outside of stores china, then ill get excited.

— σ ɱ ȥ🔻ギんシ ♥ ₿ (@oj89_) June 4, 2020

Hmm.. while I understand your desire to expand rapidly, I think you are overlooking the scale of things here. Besides having 1/5th the world’s population, most of what people buy in stores around the world comes from China. So for a supply chain tool like ToolChain, I’d be worried if they weren’t showing major traction here. After all, more than 1 in 4 things made in the world are made in China. Alibaba is one of the largest internet companies in the world and they service China nearly exclusively. And that’s not to say VeChain isn’t being seen outside of China – take a look at what DNV GL is doing with Italian wines and canned foods. Also check out the Webinar Jason Rockwood did with Producers Market, a company with a growing presence worldwide.

Finally solving the chicken verification problem!!

— WindowLinker (@windowlinker) June 5, 2020

While I suspect WindowLinker may be trolling with that screen name, I like that this was brought up. The problem isn’t verifying the chicken, the problem is that people want to have more data about what they are eating. This creates accountability in the product, as it’s no longer just a pallet of meat that showed up in the loading dock. With this QR code, everyone can see the path from Shandong (the farm) to where it was sold, as well as the ID of the worker responsible for processing this. The accountability isn’t just for the consumer though – it’s Sam’s Club holding its third-party suppliers accountable, and the third-party suppliers holding Sam’s Club accountable (Don’t sell our meat after expiration!). The reward for consumers is obvious, but Sam’s Club gets known as a trusted retailer, while the supplier benefits from the Members Mark labels and preferred branding around the store. Everyone wins, except those companies that try to bundle their overpriced consulting services with a private blockchain and charge a fortune for it!

Cool, but those qr code stickers are so low budget

— Jason Laczkovics (@Lacko_party_pak) June 4, 2020

You know that old saying… it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. If a company needs to slap stickers on hundreds of thousands of products, they don’t want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on fancy tags. This is no different from a standard price tag on any other product – it’s fast, cheap, and effective, while not distracting from the packaging. The idea that blockchain can add transparency without costing an arm and a leg is very important. Especially for produce and food, where the total cost of the product might not be very high to begin with, as compared to a luxury bag or imported bottle of wine. And in any event, it’s not like the technology bottleneck is about designing fancy stickers.

“Low budget” has another benefit – once the stickers are on, there’s no taking them off and swapping them

Any idea if this will show whether the chicken as been cleaned in ammonia or not? @SamsClub — jontask 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇨🇦 (@jontask1) June 7, 2020

At the moment, it doesn’t. But there’s no reason why it couldn’t. That’s something that I’m sure My Story and DNV GL will be looking at. This is an example of how every use case can fit the business need: Chinese shoppers aren’t as focused on details like that, whereas place of origin, date processed, and manufacturer is more important to them. It’s a great use case though.

Excuse me. How can they provide the products journey within the supply chain (Tyson’s) if they are not working with them?

— ⓧRPlusⓋET (@fredostat) June 6, 2020

Easy! VeChain creates the infrastructure (ToolChain) which they then share with channel partners and consultants. The consultants push it to clients like Walmart China & Sam’s Club China who then sign a contract, white-label the technology to match their needs and branding, and then issue directives to suppliers and manufacturers on how to use it. Partners pay the consultant a big fee and buy ToolChain Credits from VeChain. Each product ID or data upload burns VTHO and contributes to the rising mainnet traffic. But suppliers at the end of this ‘chain’ won’t necessarily have to deal directly with VeChain, or understand how the blockchain works. That’s the beauty of working with a top enterprise blockchain protocol with fee delegation.

Note: I saw some people get a little overboard on the Tyson & VeChain partnership hype. First of all, this is Tyson China, which is a subsidiary, so nothing to do (currently and that I know of) with the North American producers and supply chains. Second, this is the Sam’s Club Traceability program, so Tyson China would only be doing it for products that get sold in Sam’s Club stores. As a major B2B buyer, companies like Walmart and Sam’s Club can set standards for their suppliers. If the suppliers want these major retailers as a client (spoiler: they do), they will comply. Twitter user @BitStreetSheep got this right when he said:

#SamsClub says to #Tyson, “Hey, we want to continue to buy and carry your product, but moving forward, we need you to roll with the punches and include all this other information about it, by means of this new app (ToolChain). Tyson agrees, though they may not know about $VET

— Sheep Ⓥf ₿it Street (@BitStreetSheep) June 6, 2020

Well, mostly right. I would say it’s more of a “Hey, we can include your chicken wings as part of our Member’s Mark guaranteed products with special branding and placement throughout the stores (retail & online) if you are willing to provide more complete data with your products.” It’s more of an opportunity than a threat.

That’s it for now. If you have anymore questions, feel free to find us on Twitter @KouTseng or @benyorke.

Bayer’s G4A selects VeChain as partner for CSecure clinical trial management platform

Bayer’s G4A selects VeChain as partner for CSecure clinical trial management platform

An article in Chinese medical technology media platform VCBeat revealed that Bayer’s G4A startup round in China has produced a partnership with VeChain to collect and track supply chain data for Bayer’s clinical trials. The platform, known as Csecure, can monitor user and product data entered into the platform to ensure it is consistent throughout the trial, leading to improved safety and precision.

[translated from Chinese] After this partnership with Bayer, our greatest feeling was their rigor [precisness] towards the medical industry. This precision extends beyond just product design to include precision in communication, and in with communication between Bayer’s related business departments. We can really feel the complete meticulous attitude that Bayer has for the medical and health cause. – Sunny Lu, VeChain CEO

The article featured an interview with G4A Project Manager Ding Songen, who spoke about the importance of startups in Bayer’s own corporate structure. He pointed out that technical strengths alone were insufficient, and that Bayer looked at other factors like quality of the company’s team, project experience, value proposition, and even the financial situation of company. This led to a cooperation with VeChain as Bayer looks to improve the management of clinical trial drugs.

Ding continued to state that Bayer has been exploring the G4A program in China since 2016. “In the continuous communication with Chinese local start-ups, our understanding of the field of digital health is also deepening. In the end, G4A tried to find a new entry point in the field of digital health to achieve the goal of shaping a new health experience.”

Bayer China’s official WeChat account confirmed the partnership

The G4A partnership could have a lot of advantages for VeChain. In addition to CSecure being used internally with Bayer, G4A partners gain access to exclusive mentors, networking opportunities, and regional support. The whole process of engaging with such a large medical organization should bring valuable experience for VeChain’s product development team, as they better understand the professional needs of a leading medical enterprise.

We engage with the brightest minds both inside and outside of Bayer while identifying emerging trends and needs at the intersection of humans and technology, and transform them into new products and solutions for people. -GFA Website Mission Statement
