10 Things to do with Sync, VeChain’s Web Browser + Wallet

With the release of v1.2.2, Sync remains as the #1 choice for managing digital assets in the VeChain ecosystem. Developed in-house, the tool is much more than just a wallet, with access to a growing number of developer tools and applications. Let’s take a quick look at 10 things you can do with the web wallet and browser built on Chromium, the open-source software code that powers Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.

10. Manage Wallets

This one sounds like a no-brainer, but Sync is really good at creating and managing wallets. And having multiple wallets is always a good thing. Wallets for saving, wallets for receiving funds from strangers, wallets for using on public dApps. Sync has no limit on wallets, so you could split up and organize your accounts to ensure the privacy and security of your digital assets.

9. Lucky Airdrops

If you’ve ever been in China, you’ve definitely seen this style of money transfer. Funds are placed into a virtual red envelope (smart contract), which can then be opened by anyone with the generated link. Good idea for a promotional giveaway, a party gag, or just a gift among friends.

8. Play 2048x

Long-time community developer “Raleigh_CA” came up with a fun twist to this mobile game – users must pay an entry fee (in VET or VTHO), which goes into the pot, and is given to anyone capable of breaking the high score. Controls are quite simple, and the strategy can be picked up easily, even for beginners. The developer has hinted more games might be on the way if this one goes well, so give it a try.

7. Check out your stats on Wallü & VeChainStats

For those who like to keep track of the size of their wallets, Wallü & VeChainStats are two similar tools from the same developer that give you the power to track and monitor various analytics, such as the total amount of VTHO claimed, your global ranking by asset, and much more. You can even tag and track known addresses, perfect for when you want to keep tabs on your whale friends trading patterns.

6. Trade tokens on Vexchange

Simple, fast, and easy, this decentralized exchange lets you make small, quick swaps between VET, VTHO, and other VIP180 tokens. Great for adjusting your portfolio, arbitrage opportunities, and turning that hard-earned VTHO into something new from the ecosystem.

5. Vote on VeChain governance issues (Coming soon)

We included this one since technically, the steering committee already used it. But nodeholders should get used to this, since it could play an important role in the future of the platform.

4. Make multiple payments with VeChain Tokens

If anyone is looking for a quick payroll solution, or just wants to try out VeChain’s Multi-Task Transaction feature that bundles multiple clauses into a single transaction, check out VeChain tokens. It’s .CSV file upload feature allows you to store a long list of addresses for repeated uses, so projects can make sure employees are paid regularly, without hassle. Sure would be handy if VeChain ever got around to launching that stablecoin!

3. Deploy your own smart contracts

This one might not be for everyone, but for developers looking to write, deploy, or test a smart contract written in Solidity, Inspector is a handy tool. Don’t take my word for it, read this Medium post by community developer AbyteAhead.

2. Manage your node and browse the marketplace with Node Manager

Our community developer bounty produced this very detailed tool for managing a wallet. The unique selling point about this dApp is the ability to buy, sell, transfer, or upgrade a node by having access to the node marketplace. This functionality was previously only available on the mobile wallet, making it difficult for Ledger users to buy/sell a node, or claim the VTHO that the node had generated. If you haven’t used it already, it’s a great way to take full control of any wallet already connected to Sync or Ledger.

1. Store funds on a Ledger device

Some users have no interest in dApps or the blockchain, and just want to hold assets as a long-term “store-it-and-forget-it” investment. Sync is the answer, as its secure interface let’s users access the hardware device without importing the wallet on to the device.

As the ecosystem continues to grow, we look forward to other dApps becoming Sync compatible.

Did I leave anything out? Let me know on Twitter.

Users can download Sync directly from VeChain: Link.

Community Interview: Darron & Aaron Smith

On February 20th, social media lit up with some renders of a modern future city powered by VeChain. The original post, from video game concept artist Darron Smith, talked about how the twin brothers decided to make the city as a gesture of gratitude towards the VeChain community. The high-resolution images are sized to be used as wallpapers.

Remarkably, while the images on social media are just renders, the city is a series of actual 3D models, complete with lighting, sidewalks, and VeChain-themed vehicles. The models are powered by Unreal Engine and can be explored or “flown through” to make animated videos. Creating all this was not as simple as it might seem, with the two Smith’s claiming they spent weeks designing and building the models by hand.

The Smart City is the latest 3D Environment art project created by my brother and I. This project was was a great way to give back to the Vechain community and ecosystem. I believe cryptocurrency is the future and we wanted to create a conceptual smart city that featured the ecosystem we truly believe in. The tools used to create the Smart City are Luxology Modo, Marmoset Toolbag, Substance Painter, and Unreal Engine 4.

In the creation of this project, I was responsible for creating the the emissive signs, buildings, and post production. I had a lot of fun working on this project and I appreciate all who have taken the time to view our work.

The brothers teased that after all the fun they had, there might be more updates in store. Listen to the full-length interview on the second half of VetCast #16:

Weekly Roundup – February 28

One of those weeks where covering the VeChain ecosystem was like a box of chocolates…

Major Update: PoA 2.0 – SURFACE

Two of the brightest minds at VeChain – Chief Scientist Peter Zhou (PhD University of Southampton) and Senior Researcher Ren Zhijie (postdoc and PhD at TU Delft) put together a 21 page preprint on their new consensus algorithm, named SURFACE. If you aren’t a very technical person, don’t bother reading it, you won’t get very far. In layman’s terms, the main updates are to increase:

  • role determination and rules (to prevent attacks),
  • throughput (traffic that can pass through),
  • latency (speed of response),
  • finality (speed of block confirmation).

This combination of speed, scalability and security makes up the Holy Trinity of what a blockchain needs to perform efficiently. VeChain’s continued attention to this is necessary to keep pace with the rapid speed of R&D in the blockchain world. The full preprint is posted here: Link

Browser Plugins Galore

After the Totient revealed Comet would no longer be updated, an active group of community members decided to “crowdfund” development of a Google Chrome Wallet plugin, allowing users to interact with dApps from the comfort of their usual web browser.

Their efforts were successful, as they reached their target and announced a Ukrainian development team was preparing to undertake the task of creating the plugin, similar to Metamask for Ethereum.

A few days later, ecosystem project Safe Haven announced that they were purchasing the original plugin, Comet, with the intention of making it open-source and furthering development. This gives the community two potential browser plugins, as well as the return of the NFT marketplace Cometverse.

OceanEx Telegram AMA

OceanEx’s CEO Nan Xiaoning responded to the dipping OCE token price by reassuring the community that the team was working hard to increase the token price. Nan took on hard hitting topics including issues with trading bots and token price, which can be read about here.

We would like to explore more practical OCE use cases for all OCE holders. For example, we are connecting with a crypto game company, to list our OCE as utility token in the online game. With OCE you could play a lot of fun games. Another idea is to create our OceanEx merch online store. Our supporters will have a chance to buy our tailored merch by using OCE. We are also looking for more third-party companies to form the cooperation to add more value and applications for our platform token. There is a lot more to be explored in the OCE use cases.

First-of-its-kind marketplace added to Real Items

Over the past weekend (February 22), Real Items launched their NFT-backed marketplace, to sell verified items directly to consumers. The marketplace featured a number of retail items, including a popular mug with a QR code linked to its transaction on the VeChain mainnet.

The marketplace is not the main business model for Real Items. Instead, it is meant to serve as a demo of what other businesses could provide customers as part of Real Items growing Software-as-a-Service offering: Real Items built the infrastructure to put a company’s goods on the (VeChain) blockchain, as well as provides end users with landing pages and media to educate shoppers about the goods they are buying. After purchasing, buyers can input a single use 2FA pin to claim the item, giving them additional functionality down the road, and providing sellers more insights on their marketshare. When the item is claimed, a second transaction occurs, transferring ownership to the customer.

The Real items application suite leverages VeChain’s built in fee delegation to sponsor initial transactions so users aren’t required to be familiar with blockchain or VET.  Their solution removes the need for brands to dive into every nuance of blockchain technology so they can integrate in a matter of minutes opposed to months.  Their cloud platform uses VeChain’s MPP (Multi-party payment) saving shop owners and customers from the complexities of blockchain transactions.

Real Items is currently building an enterprise sales team to push this model into more mainstream areas. However, one area they are committed to working with is helping out with charities and sustainable organizations. Higher traceability and customer confidence makes shoppers more likely to support these initiatives, and Real Items can do a lot in this regard.

An example of Real Items supporting charitable initiatives

Real Items makes it easy for sellers to get involved. Using the Real Items Shopify app, sellers can instantly link their webstore products and print out labels with 2FA-QR codes or send the NFTs direct to a customer’s real items account after a purchase.  This eliminates the need for consumers to have a wallet.  Their assumption is that most users will treat their digital certificates (NFTs) like Bitcoin on Coinbase, making personal custody the last option they choose.

Also in the marketplace was an original VeChain101 design. The design is a nod to VeChain’s ties to Shanghai, where the blockchain began, and their original use case verifying supply chains. It features a container ship on the the historic Huangpu River, with The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center forming the backdrop.

Playtable and 8Hours Foundation – Blurring the lines between blockchain and traditional gaming

This is an editorial by Ben Yorke.

While I’m a big believer in blockchain’s ability to create new business models, 2019 had me feeling pretty pessimistic towards small marketcap alt-coin projects. When Playtable announced they were bringing NFTs and cryptocurrency to their tabletop gaming console, I was impressed by the hardware, but was worried they were forcing a purposeless token into a product that didn’t need it. After all, VeChain enthusiasts hardly needed any reminders about the declining market value of alt-coins, as fewer and fewer speculators were putting their money where their mouths were.

Still, the idea of having a dedicated tabletop hardware console that supports NFT gaming sounded like a real step towards bringing blockchain to the mainstream. With a massive backlog of pre-orders for the console, Playtable has the opportunity to gain tens of thousands of users in the upcoming year alone. Add to that an impressive list of titles, IPs, and famous advisors already onboard, the possibilities are certainly staggering. There’s no argument here – Playtable is in a strong position. If they can deliver the hardware and software as promised, the customers should be lining up to buy the device.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjSUX9Qm0Xw
The Playtable extends mainstream and original boardgames with its digital interface

What’s the big deal with NFTs?

Playtable and their partners are putting RFID chips into toys – 3D figurines with built in cryptocurrency wallets that can store tokens, data, and badges to be gifted, transacted and shown off in the digital space. This allows in-game accomplishments to be reflected in real life. Characters in your favorite games can be bought or 3D printed, and then interact or “battle” in the virtual world, merging the wild popularity of Nintendo Amiibo with the spectacular secondhand value of Cryptokitties.

So what’s this VIM World thing?

Last week, Playtable & 8 Hours Foundation released the whitepaper for VIMworld, an ecosystem around NFT characters that can be won, bought or traded. In addition to their own IPs, well-known third-party game designers are planning to add their own characters. Independent toy and game devs will be able to create their own characters, which they can sell or gift as a reward to loyal customers.

What can we do with them?

8 Hours is developing a number of gaming formats, including:

  • Sandbox – To interact and experiment with NFT toys
  • Battlegrid – Combat with physical cards or figurines
  • VIM Arena – A web-based dApp allowing matches of up to 20v20. EHrt and VIMs can be wagered on the outcome, raising the stakes for competitors
  • Raffle and Vending Machine – Another web dApp that allows toy and game designers to distribute NFTs
  • VIM Exchange – A place to buy or sell NFTs from designers or other users

This solves a number of problems. First, web dApps bring VIMWorld to everyone, not just people who buy the physical Playtable console. Second, it gives value to physical toys and cards in ways we’ve never experienced. Higher “ranks” and tokens can be earned through in-game successes, translating to an increase in secondhand market value. This incentivizes players to keep coming back, extending the life of games. Most importantly, it adds another use-case to the EHrT token, which is a vital part of the VIMWorld Ecosystem. For more on that, read the whitepaper and look out for some of their articles on Medium.

What can really seal the deal for all this?

Simply put, Playtable and 8 Hours need to deliver on the hardware and software. Making a video game ecosystem is no small task, and the product needs to live up to the hype. Landing some big name titles for VIMWorld, like the ones teased in the whitepaper, could create a landslide of demand from outside the blockchain-sphere, as mainstream gaming fans flood in. This scenario, while not guaranteed, could be just the thing that lights the VeChain mainnet on fire, and brings in a flurry of media attention.

It would surely be ironic, if after years of enterprise talk, it was some cute and fuzzy NFTs that really put VeChain on the map. Seeing the potential for Playtable here – is it really that farfetched?
